Common interview questions like ‘What is your greatest weakness?’, ‘Why do you want to work here?’, and ‘Why should we hire you?’ are often asked in job interviews.

Lynn Taylor, a workplace expert and author, said the final question among the three above could be the best opportunity for you to demonstrate that you are a good fit for the vacant position in the company. When employers ask this question, they want you to convince them that you are the best candidate.

However, because the scope of the question “Why should we hire you?” is so wide, it can cost you points if you give a poor answer. Expert Lynn Taylor suggests that “a technique to answer this question is that you have to come up with three main reasons that show why you are the perfect choice for the employer”.

Here are some specific suggestions for some tips that can help you answer the above question in an interview, according to Business Insider.

Listen to important points

“When reading or hearing about the job requirements announced by the employer, you can take note of some keywords that will help you target the appropriate answer when asked. For example, if the job requires organizational skills, you can note down some related programs and software that you know how to use. After writing them down, you will have data to build on from the actual needs of the business,” Taylor said.

At this point, you need to “sell” yourself in a special way by asking questions: What makes you particularly capable of doing this position better than your colleagues? How does your background knowledge align with their tasks?…

Focus on the main factors

There are three main factors that you should consider: providing the employer with a big picture of yourself and your work process, discussing your achievements, and demonstrating that you have excellent people skills. All of these contents need to be shared concisely.

For example, you can share information about: the work you have done at Company X in which field, for how long, using skills, knowledge, and education in which area. If you have been regularly promoted or given more important responsibilities, don’t forget to let the employer know. Next, talk about your achievements are also an opportunity for you to talk more specifically about specific projects that show the relevant experience and skills you have. Finally, you should show the employer that you have good qualities and soft skills that are suitable for the position you are applying for (such as: trustworthy, good teamwork, a motivational leader…).

Show yourself as a great investment

Expert Taylor said: “Managers all want to ensure that you are a worthwhile investment. They want to minimize risks and avoid mistakes. This is an opportunity for you to use answers from the example questions below to demonstrate the benefits that the company can enjoy if they hire you.”

– Have you ever reduced expenses by a certain percentage or a certain number for the company?

– Have you guaranteed new customers and expanded current business operations?

– Have you ever simplified production or business processes?

– Have you ever reduced the company’s revenue?

– Have you ever developed a new program to increase business revenue?

Enthusiasm

“Once you have presented strong arguments about ‘why I should be part of this company’, you need to show your enthusiasm and passion. No matter how good you look on your resume, you still need to show that you are truly dynamic and want this job,” Taylor shared.

Be specific, but the shorter the better

When marketing yourself to the employer, you can easily get lost in long, exaggerated answers. Therefore, be careful when answering. By practicing at home, paying attention to the necessary factors, and being confident, you can do well in the interview and get your dream job.
